Following his smash hit company debut with The Hours, acclaimed composer Kevin Puts returns to the Metropolitan Opera with a stunning new production of his Pulitzer Prize winning first opera, Silent Night. Inspired by the historic true events of the 1914 Christmas truce during the First World War, this grand, cinematic work depicts a powerful moment of shared humanity as enemy soldiers spontaneously set aside their weapons to mingle, exchange gifts, and sing carols across the trenches of the Western Front. Featuring an evocative, multilingual libretto by Mark Campbell based on the Academy Award nominated film Joyeux Noël, the opera has been celebrated globally as an overwhelmingly emotional and deeply moving masterpiece since its 2011 premiere.  

This compelling new staging by director James Robinson brings the brutal realities and fleeting peace of the battlefields directly to life with breathtaking visual scope. The Met’s presentation boasts a spectacular, star-studded cast led by soprano Elza van den Heever alongside celebrated tenors Ben Bliss and Rolando Villazón. Under the baton of debuting conductor Dalia Stasevska, the performance beautifully navigates Puts’s lush, sweeping orchestral score, creating a profound theatrical experience that honors the resilience of the human spirit in the most inhumane conditions.
