Giuseppe Verdi’s thrilling operatic masterpiece Macbeth opens the Metropolitan Opera season with hair-raising drama and spectacular singing in an unforgettable Live in HD broadcast. Based on William Shakespeare’s immortal tragedy, the narrative follows a scheming Scottish nobleman and his power-mad wife who are determined to seize the throne at any cost, unleashing a ruinous path of ambition and murder that ultimately damns them both. Composed during Verdi’s highly prolific career, the opera features a brilliant Italian libretto crafted by his frequent collaborator Francesco Maria Piave with additional text from Count Andrea Maffei. This penetrating new Met production is brought to life by acclaimed director Louisa Proske, who masterfully captures the eerie, supernatural atmosphere and psychological depth of the haunted king’s bloody ascent to power.

This monumental presentation features a world class, star-studded cast under the baton of Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Celebrated baritone Quinn Kelsey delivers a powerful, nuanced performance as the tortured Scottish monarch haunted by the ghosts of his victims, starring opposite the reigning dramatic soprano of the world, Lise Davidsen, in her highly anticipated role as the ruthless Lady Macbeth. Rounding out the exceptional ensemble are the commanding bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as Macbeth’s ill-fated friend Banquo and the brilliant tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the heroic avenger Macduff. Filled with Verdi’s most intense choruses and breathtakingly difficult vocal standard pieces, this Met Opera presentation provides a definitive, visually striking exploration of political corruption and human vulnerability.
