Jim Messina is one of the most influential musicians, songwriters, producers, and recording engineers in American music history. Over a remarkable career spanning more than five decades, he has helped shape the sound of rock, country rock, and folk rock through his work with Buffalo Springfield, Poco, and Loggins & Messina. Messina first gained national recognition as a producer and engineer for Buffalo Springfield before joining the band as a bassist. Following the group’s breakup, he co-founded Poco alongside Richie Furay, helping pioneer the country rock movement that would later influence artists such as the Eagles and countless others.
In 1970, Messina began working with a young singer songwriter named Kenny Loggins, a collaboration that unexpectedly evolved into the legendary duo Loggins & Messina. Together they released a string of platinum selling albums and enduring hits including “Your Mama Don’t Dance,” “Danny’s Song,” and “House at Pooh Corner,” becoming one of the most successful recording acts of the 1970s. In addition to his accomplishments as a performer, Messina has earned widespread respect as a producer, engineer, and mentor whose work has left a lasting mark on popular music. Today, he continues to tour with his band, The Road Runners, celebrating a catalog of timeless songs while sharing stories and music from an extraordinary career that helped define an era.
