From classic Bluegrass tunes to contemporary hits, Del McCoury Band’s music is a blend of traditional Bluegrass sounds and modern influences that everyone will love. The band is led by the Grammy® award-winning singer and guitarist, Del McCoury. With over 50 years of experience in the industry, McCoury and his talented band have become a staple at Newberry Opera House and in the Bluegrass scene.
Emerging from humble beginnings in York County, Pennsylvania nearly eighty years ago, Del was not the likeliest of candidates for legendary status. As a teen, he was captivated by a master banjo player, Earl Scruggs, and decided he’d be a banjo picker, too. Del was met with the opportunity of a lifetime in 1963. He joined Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys. Considered the Father of Bluegrass, Monroe transformed McCoury from a banjo player to a guitarist and a lead singer. Now helming the Del McCoury Band with sons Ronnie and Bob, the ensemble continues to represent in a larger, growing musical community. The band is a peerless torchbearer for the entire sweep and scope of Bluegrass history. McCoury has earned a whole new generation of fans, including some in unlikely places. McCoury’s sixth decade in a half-century of Bluegrass bliss brings new triumphs, new collaborations, and new music. With but a single change in membership in 27 years, the Del McCoury Band shows unprecedented stability as well as garnering the respect and admiration of the industry for its unmistakable work. The band has been awarded nine IBMA Entertainer of the Year trophies, membership in the cast of the legendary Grand Ole Opry, a Best Bluegrass Album Grammy® award in 2005, and the band scored another Grammy® win in 2014.
