Newberry Opera House 2018-19 season is a big one!
The wait is over, friends. Your Newberry Opera House is excited and proud to announce the 21st season! With more variety than ever, the Newberry Opera House is striving to continuously provide quality programming, enhanced experiences, and a fresh look at the season brochure and website. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, August 15 at 10:00 A.M. With so many unique experiences from which to choose, challenge yourself to pick a new seat, to see a show you maybe would not think to see normally, and to ask your neighbor who you may not know so well to go out for dinner and a show! Take a chance, try something new, invest in a one of a kind experience at the Newberry Opera House!
National and international performers take the stage at this intimate venue. From a one night only Rock festival, to Grammy award winning Wynton Marsalis, to humorist Jeanne Robertson, to the 90’s favorite Fastball it will be hard to pick just one.
Headlining the 2018-19 season, the 2018 Resurrection Tour brings big names in hard rock such as Puddle of Mudd, Saliva, and special guests The Veer Union, Tantric and Shallow Side. This rock festival jammed into one night will certainly sway the chandeliers at the Opera House. Multi-Grammy nominee Boney James began playing music at seven, but he really found his calling when he picked up a saxophone at 10 years old. Joining them this August are The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Ricky Skaggs and the sold-out The Swingin’ Medallions. These tickets will sell fast sure you don’t miss out!
Be on the lookout for expanded Enhanced Experiences listed throughout the brochure. You can find these and many more Enhanced Experiences listed under the Show name and sponsor in the brochure or on the Shows & Events pages online. Arrive early for ‘ABBA the Concert’ in your best 70s/80s Halloween costume and enter the costume contest in the lobby, or try your moves out during the moon walk contest before ‘Who’s Bad the Michael Jackson Tribute show’. There are also light receptions before all of our fine arts performances. These experiences are included in the ticket price unless otherwise stated in the brochure and website.
Holiday shows are a must see this year as the Newberry Opera House welcomes Internationally renowned Pulitzer and Grammy® winning artist Wynton Marsalis and the
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with special guests back to the Newberry Opera House. Joining them this holiday season are Lightwire Theatre hosting ‘A Very Electric Christmas;’ ‘Classic Nashville Roadshow Christmas’ featuring classic country favorites; ‘Glee’s’ Jayne Lynch will stop by with friends for ‘A Swingin’ Little Christmas’ and what holiday season would be complete without seeing A Christmas Carol?
Ticketed Enhanced Experiences went fast last season, so make sure to buy yours early. The Christmas classic, ‘The Nutcracker,’ returns this winter with the very popular ‘Tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy.’ New this season ‘Tiny Tim’s Toy Shop’ at the Newberry Arts Center will be a great addition to your ‘A Christmas Carol’ visit.
Back by popular demand, the Family Adventure Series is perfect for groups of all ages. Families will light up when ‘Myumana Presents “Currents” Edison vs. Tesla,’ which is inspired by the historical battle of the currents between Thomas Edison & Nikola Tesla presented through the window of the arts with unique sounds, lights and visual effects – perfect for your little science enthusiast. Mermaid Theatre returns with the beloved children’s book adaptation of ‘Rainbow Fish,’ and Virginia Repertory Theatre will round out the Family Adventure series with ‘Stuart Little.’ These shows will be sure to amaze any child and leave them wanting more. The Family Adventure Series is sponsored by Ballentine Chick-Fil-A with several appearances by The Cow. Check online or in the season brochure for more preshow actives.
Opera House alum and newbies unite this season as Robert Earl Keen is welcomed back to the stage with his ‘fun party never ends’ attitude this fall. Everyone knows the song, “It’s A Great Day to Be Alive,” and you have the chance to hear it live, twice if you want, as Travis Tritt will return to the Opera House stage in January. Lonestar will ‘Amaze’ and will have you singing along with their country hits, Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers, Ailey II, Confederate Railroad, Kentucky Headhunters, ‘Keb Mo’, Little Texas and The Righteous Brothers are all shows you won’t want to miss!
The popular Gospel series is expanded this year with favorites such as Former Gaither Vocal Group lead singer Guy Penrod, The Voice herself Sandi Patty, Michael W. Smith, and others. Tickets will go fast so get yours quickly! Those whose heart beats to a gaelic tempo will love the Celtic series featuring Julie Fowlis – the voice behind the theme song for ‘Disney’s Brave’, Gaelic Storm, ‘Danu: St. Patrcick’s Day Celebration and ‘Carol of the King: Irish Dance Spectacular.’
The Fine Arts & Dance series thrives this year with 13 inspiring performances from artists such as Campania Flamenco Eduardo Guerrero direct from Cadiz, Spain; Puccini’s famous opera ‘Tosca;’ the heir to the renowned Gypsy Flamenco dynasty – ‘Farruquito Flamenco;’ the world renowned genre bending violinists Black Violin and Damien Escobar; chamber musical groups: The Lincoln Trio, Canellakis - Brown Duo, and Thalea String Quartet; and more! Make sure to arrive early for these performances to enjoy our free Fine Arts receptions one hour prior to performance.
This is just the tip of the iceberg folks, favorites like The Oak Ridge Boys and Edwin McCain with his full band (you heard right) will also be coming back to Newberry. Can’t decide which show you want to see? Features like the Make Your Own Series make it easy for you to pick 4 or more of your favorite shows and create your own discounted package. Do not forget to check out the genre series like Big Band & Jazz; Broadway & Theatre, Rock’n Blues, and the Tribute series (just to name a few).
