There is no doubt that Christmas in Newberry is a special experience, from the lights in Downtown Newberry to the "snowfall" on Friday nights in the park, but what makes Newberry stand out is the Christmas shows at the Newberry Opera House.
Every year, the Newberry Opera House holds a great line up of Christmas shows, from music to theatre, to dance and comedy and much more. This season the Newberry Opera House has almost doubled the number of holiday shows.
Christmas classics such as The Nutcracker with Dance Alive and the musical drama A Christmas Carol will grace the stage again this year. Make sure to add on Tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy or Tiny Tim's Toy Shop arts and crafts with the Newberry Art Center. A Very Electric Christmas, presented by America's Got Talent alum Lightwire Theatre will help the whole family get into the Christmas spirit. This Christmas show that uses lights, and dance to entertain while sticking to a Christmas theme and telling a story. The story is about a young bird Max and his family who are heading south for winter but Max gets blown off course and ends up at the north pole. This story is about his journey to head home and his encounters with different Christmas characters around the north pole. Audiences of all ages will enjoy this captivating tale of family, friendship, and hope set to timeless holiday hits. Before this show, Chick-fil-A Ballentine will be selling sandwiches in the lobby. **Please note date is different from original brochure listing.**
Santa's Enchanted Workshop is a family-friendly performance is a musical that incorporates old favorites with a new and intriguing story. The story is about Stanley who sets out with his sister SuSu, to find out about Christmas for himself. They travel to the North pole where they end up stuck at a gas station run by a mysterious old man named Nick who shows wonders of the imagination and brings his run-down gas station to life as a magic toyshop. They encounter a villain and have to save the day, renewing Stanely's Christmas spirit, and keeping his imagination alive. This show is great for the whole family and is a great way to get in the Christmas spirit. One hour prior to the performance, there is a pajama party with cookies and milk compliments of Chick-fil-A of Ballentine.
The Nutcracker, presented by Dance Alive is an adaptation of this famous Christmas ballet, which was written and choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov and was released in 1892. But it was not successful when it was first released. But during the 1960s, Ballet companies created adaptations of The Nutcracker and eventually became a Broadway show and has been a Christmas favorite for the last 60 years. This ballet is about the Sugar Plum Fairy and her breathtaking court and the Nutcracker Prince and his toy soldiers. If you enjoy the art of ballet and want to see a Christmas Favorite, this is the perfect show for you. Today, most major ballet companies put on an adaptation of the Nutcracker.
At 2:30 P.M. there is an enhanced experience: Tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy for an additional $20 at the Newberry Firehouse Convention Center. Tea will be catered by both Olwen McKenna and the Silverspoon Tea Rooms.

See this adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol bring this story to life, in such a way that is alive with color and movement. This classic Christmas story is an enduring tale, which gives a great reminder to the real meaning of Christmas; a holiday of generosity, joy, and celebration.

Jane Lynch's "A Swingin Little Christmas" is a holiday show in which Jane Lynch, Kate Flannery (Tv's The Office), Tim Davis (TV's Glee) and the Guerrero Quintet bring Christmas songs with tight harmony with a Jane Lynch twist. Jane Lynch is famous for her roles in TV's Glee, Criminal Minds, Hollywood Game Night and The Good Fight. One hour prior to the performance there is an ugly Christmas sweater contest for all who have a ticket to the show.

Carol of the King: The Irish Dance Christmas Spectacular is back by popular demand with it's inspiring Christmas story. Carol of the King exposes you to how Ireland celebrates Christmas and allows you to see the unique art of Irish Dance. This performance will tell you the story of King Solomon and his kingdom. They are in the midst of preparing for their traditional Christmas season celebration when King Solomon is put under a spell by the dark sorceress Circe. This Celtic Christmas show is a family-friendly performance and a great way to see a new, different and interesting Christmas show.
During this year's Christmas season, The Newberry Opera House will have a traveling Smithsonian exhibit on small towns in rural America, in the lobby from mid-December through early February. This Exhibition allows small towns to look at their own paths to highlight the changes affecting the fortunes of Small Town, USA and this exhibit hopes to spark conversation on how small towns will revive their historic downtown districts. Take time before or after any of the shows to walk through this exhibit.
