Newberry, SC- Every season the Newberry Opera House hosts at least one musician or band that is known for being successful outside of the traditional music genres. Usually, this musician or group of musicians infuse sounds from several different genres to create a different but very unique and entertaining new sound. Black Violin is one of these, the duo is known for their own unique blend of classical music, and hip hop

Black Violin 360Named after an album by violinist "Stuff Smith", Black Violin is a violin and viola-playing hip-hop duo. Black Violin is led by classically trained string players Wil B. (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin) and joined onstage by DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes. The band uses their unique blend of classical and hip-hop music to overcome stereotypes while encouraging people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds to join together to break down cultural barriers. They met in high school in a Fort Lauderdale performing arts program. The group formed after attending separate universities.

Black Violin places heavy emphasis on educational outreach and overcoming stereotypes. Over the past 12 months, the band has performed for over 100,000 students in the US and Europe and has partnered with Yamaha EDU and NAMM (National Association of Music Manufacturers) to continue supporting music education. Black Violin, alongside artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Elton John, recently joined with Turnaround Arts to bring arts education to struggling schools in underserved communities.

The duo received national exposure after an appearance with Alicia Keys at the 2004 Billboard Awards and winning the talent show Showtime at the Apollo in 2005. They released their first album in 2008, followed by Classically Trained in 2012 and Stereotypes in 2015. Their most popular songs include: “A-Flat”, “Stereotypes”, “Virtuoso”, “Dreamer”, and “Vivaldi- Spring”.

If you enjoy classical music or hip-hop then this show is the perfect mix for you. Don’t miss the chance to see this duo in concert when they visit the Newberry Opera House this March.
