Looking for a way to help our community while experiencing amazing performances? The Newberry Opera House is looking for a few good men and women to complement their fine corps of volunteers, known as Ambassadors. These Awesome Ambassadors have saved the Opera House over $1.9 million since the renovation in 1998.

The Box Office will add you to an interested in volunteering list so you receive a notice of summer training. Training for most positions only occurs once a year before the season begins in late August. However, Tour Guides and Administrative Helpers are currently being allowed to go through a shadowing program with on the job training.

Classes covering all aspects of the duties of each volunteer position are usually conducted each summer prior to the season.

In addition to feeling like a part of the exciting work of this award winning Art Center and economic catalyst, ambassadors also often enjoy the interaction with fellow volunteers and patrons. While seats are not always available, depending on their position volunteers do usually get to see most of the shows they work  - for free. Comp tickets can also be earned for hours worked. This allows volunteers access to amazing artists from around the globe. Stars like the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Oak Ridge Boys, Olivia Newton-John, Loretta Lynn, Roberta Flack, Willie Nelson and Michael Bolton are all Opera House alums.

Ambassador Positions

Event staff volunteers are the core group at the Newberry Opera House whose main purpose is to see to the comfort and safety of the audience. They greet and assist our patrons in order to ensure that all visitors are treated to an enjoyable experience while attending one of our performances. They run the elevator, take tickets, and—of course—direct patrons to their seats.

Concession Workers
These volunteers man the concessions bar, but are sometimes asked to greet at the doors and sell artist merchandise. They also act as hosts of the lobby during events.

Hospitality Hosts
Hospitality personnel primarily make sure the performers are well fed. They also sometimes assist performers with dry-cleaning, errands, or anything they need to help them perform without worrying about the numerous details associated with traveling to a new, strange location.

Tour Guides
Tour guides are an essential part of the small town Southern hospitality for which the Opera House is known. A warm welcome and personal attention has gained the Opera House many a friend. Tour guides man the lobby, greet visitors and provide backstage tours to groups and individuals.

Often referred to as runners, these volunteers pick up performers at the airport, shuttle groups to hotels, and help them run errands while in Newberry.

Backstage Help
These volunteers help the Tech Department as needed to ensure a production is a success. Backstage help may be skilled volunteers such as hair dressers or seamstresses called upon for large Broadway and opera productions or an all important extra stage hand during a large load-in or load-out. Page turners for pianists are also sometimes needed.

Administrative Office Help
Help is always needed to answer phones, compile mailings, fax data to newspapers and radio stations, prepare programs for performances, filing, and general office tasks. Duties in this area can be performed during daytime business hours and on show days or evenings. The Sunshine Committee sends out birthday cards and other correspondence to Ambassadors. The Archive & Scrapbooking Committee helps keep a record of each season and processes archival items that are donated to the Opera House. The Return Visitor Committee sends notes to first-time visitors.


  • 15 Years of Age or Older (Concession Workers who serve alcohol must be 21)
  • Concession workers must complete Online Alcohol Server Training
  • All show night volunteers must be able to stand for long periods of time (for most positions)
  • Attend a Training Session usually held at the beginning of the season.
  • Pass a SLED background check.
  • Minimal annual service (Ambassadors are requested to work 24 events a year)

The Newberry Opera House Guild was created in 2004 to offer financial support to the Opera House and help promote its endeavors throughout the Midlands. The Guild meets monthly on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Opera House.


The Guild is open to anyone with an interest in helping to raise funds to support the performing arts at the Opera House, and in helping to educate and enliven the surrounding communities through the arts. Guild members pay an annual membership fee of $35 (new members under the age of 30 pay a Young Member fee of $20). This fee helps support the work of the Guild which includes organizing 2-3 major fundraising events each year. In recent years, these events have included an annual Oyster Roast, Luau, vendor fair entitled A Fair to Remember, a 50/50 raffle, tag sales and more.


While the Guild’s mission is steeped in the work of raising funds, the organization is a welcoming one that succeeds because of its collegial spirit and abiding philosophy of cooperation and inclusiveness. This spirit grows from the philosophy that the arts make a community whole and should be available to one and all.
